Turn to Each Other

I know a man, his life was broken

Scattered in pieces on the road

Friends gathered round, and kind words were spoken

And they brought that poor boy home

Now who has not been the prodigal son?

Who's not been the wayward child?

Who has not traveled the wrong road

And lost who they were for a while?

You've got to turn, turn, turn to each other

When all of the hope you've got is gone

You've got to turn, turn, turn to each other

Looking for strength to carry on

You could read all the confusion

Written across her soul

She tried to tell them just who she was

And then they swallowed that poor girl whole

Oh but for the strength of her sister

Who picked her up and helped her along

Now she's standing on her own two feet

And you should hear her singing her own song

She sings you turn, turn, turn to each other

When all of the hope you've got is gone

You've got to turn, turn, turn to each other

Looking for strength to carry on

Everybody wants to be so strong

Everybody wants to show they can do it alone

Nobody ever lets on

That they can't make it on their own

Listen to me now

No matter how high you climb there will always be a way you can fall

No matter how hard you hide, the truth is going to find you and finally comes to call

And all the gold and all the power can't keep it from falling apart

There's nothing left you in the final hour but the kindness of the human heart

You've got to turn, turn, turn to each other

When all of the hope you've got is gone

You've got to turn, turn, turn to each other

Looking for strength to carry on

Northern Hills

The snow is shadowed in blue at 6am
You can feel the cold in your bones
There's work in the barn before breakfast
And plowing the drifts where they've blown

And out across the valley, in the shadow of the hills
You can see where the town has grown
40 years of sunrise have met this place
Since I first called this place my own

Don't be a fool, don't be blind
They say this land is just solid gold waiting to be mined
My life has grown here like the maple
Rooted in these Northern Hills

They open up the north slope to the skiers
There's new construction on the mountain side
The agent called, he says he wants to see me
If I didn't mind on Wednesday he'd drive by

Johnson cashed in last year, he packed up and moved south
He said he just grew tired of living hand to mouth
If I had any sense, I guess, I'd travel the same route
But something keeps me hanging on

Don't be a fool, don't be blind
They say this land is just sold gold waiting to be mined
My life has grown here like the maple
Rooted in these Northern Hills

They ask you what you're doing, you can't explain
What it is that makes you act that way
Something in the way you're born or how you're raised
That makes some people go and other's stay

Stars blink out one by one 'til there's none

There left to greet the morning sun
And I stand here alone where there's work to be done
Rooted in these northern hills

Don't be a fool, don't be blind
They say this land is just solid gold waiting to be mined
My life has grown here like the maple
Rooted in these Northern Hills

My life has grown here like the maple
Rooted in these Northern Hills

In His Eyes

Sometimes I say I love you, sometimes I say I care
Sometimes I say nothing, and you wonder if I'm there
But the river still is running and the well has not gone dry
If you look you can see it in his eyes

In his eyes, the love that's grown between us come alive
Like a bird that takes to wing we watch it rise
After all these years together it comes as no surprise
When I look I can see you in his eyes

Well, I know when you're angry, and I know when you're sad
And I know in a moment what kind of day you had
Here I'll take him now, you've held him all day long
He's almost gone, you can see it in his eyes

In his eyes, I watch the moon as she walks across the sky
As daylight slowly fades and finally dies
And the glimmer of the starlight like diamonds in the sky
If you look you can see it in his eyes

If I am really you and you are really me
Somehow, somewhere our souls touched to set this spirit free
And he is just a flame that burns the candle of our lives
If you look you see it flicker in his eyes

And in his eyes, there's the steady glow of fire in his eyes
Brighter with each day that passes by
It's the growing of the spirit that will not be denied
If you look you can see it in his eyes

So one and one make two til together they make one
They help him learn to stand and find his own place in his sun
Every new one born is a world that's just begun
And in their eyes a reason to go on

And in their eyes a reason to keep mine own both open wide
To get up in the morning for one more try
To hope that we have just begun that this world won't soon die
If you look you can see it in their eyes

And when I look I see it in his eyes

Over the Bay

I'm out on the sand, out in the sun
Out of commission from this bottle of rum
I'm still here though I seem to be fading away
I'm just watching this music float right over the bay

I was naïve, I never knew
'Til I come down here what the sun could do
I feel my ambition just slowly slipping away
I'm just watching this music float right over the bay

My oh my can you tell me how it come to pass
You know that time flies, it all went by too fast

Back up north, there's work to be done
When I hit those mean streets, I'll be on a dead run
Down here they can't catch me, I'm too far away
I'm just watching this music float right over the bay

I know that I've got a lot of things to do
But if you say so I would spend another day with you

The suns going to shine, the tides going to roll
This island life is going to take its toll
Just sit right here, I'll bring you a beer and we can play
We're going to watch this music float right over the bay

We're going to watch this music float right over the bay
We're going to watch this music float right over the bay

Keep It Up

Keep it up, keep it up, my son
Don't stop your work until the day is done
Never quit until that setting sun calls you to your home

Father's out working in the field
Holding in the daily bread
And I am following in his footsteps
Hanging on every word being said

He says you Keep it up, keep it up, my son
Don't stop your work until the day is done
Never quit until that setting sun calls you to your home

Father's out working in the fields
Keeping his rows straight and planting his seeds
And I am alone on this empty highway
Trying to find out just where it leads

He says you Keep it up, Keep it up, my son
Don't stop your work until the day is done
Never quit until that setting sun calls you to your home

Father's out working in the fields
Toiling in the heat and pulling his share
I'm in the clouds with my dreams and wishes
Just trying to find out how I can stay there

He says dream on, dream on my son
Don't stop your dream until your time is done
Never quit until that setting sun calls you to your home

Father's worked his last day in the fields
Harvest is in and is stored away
And I'm sitting here by his bedside
Hanging on every word I hear him say

He says Drink up, drink up my son
Don't stop your work until your time is done
Never quit until that setting sun calls you to your home

Now I'm out working in the field
Holding in the daily bread
He is following in his footsteps
Hanging on every word being said
I say keep it up, keep it up, my son
Don't stop your work until the day is done
Never quit until that setting sun calls you to your home

Coyote

Way out on the mesa
A voice calls in the night
The man says that's Coyote
He's just howling at the pale moonlight

Coyote, he's the Old One
You can see it in his eyes
He caught the wind, stole the fire
He put the starts up in the sky

Oh, Coyote, when you gonna change your tune?
When you gonna stop running round all night
And giving your song to the moon?

Coyote, he's a gambler
Coyote, he's a fool
Coyote, he's an outlaw
He's got no time for rules

Coyote, he's a wise one
His wits are his disguise
He's honest when he can be
But when he wants to he can lie

Oh, Coyote, when you gonna change your tune?
When you gonna stop running round all night
Giving your song to the moon?

Coyote's tied down to the earth
Got no wings to fly
Lifts his head, and sings so sad
Think that he might die

But in the clean light of the morning
Coyote says he'll change
His friends just shake their heads and smile
Some things always stay the same

Oh, Coyote you're never gonna change your tune
Never gonna stop running round all night
Giving your song to the moon

It's the price you pay for freedom
This living day to day
It's what it's cost to be alive
It's a price, but it's a price he's glad to pay

Way out on the mesa
A voice calls in the night
The man says that's Coyote
He's just howling, howling at the pale moonlight

Oh, Coyote never gonna change your tune.
Never gonna stop running round all night
Giving your song to the moon

Leave Them Alone

Look at them shine
And look at 'em all
You look long enough
You see one of them fall

Out there at night
It makes you feel small
Standing there
Under the sky

How many times
Have I gone to my knees
With a prayer to the starts
The madness would cease

There was one place
I could always find peace
Now they want
That Place too

Why don't we leave them alone
With the war in the heavens
Tell me where do we go
Why don't we leave them alone
Ah, Enough is enough
When do we learn to say no

Well, I do believe
I've heard this before
They say we're going to
To just build this one more

When it's all finished
We'll be secure
They've said that
Again and again

We point at them
They point at us
From the seeds of suspicion
Grow the fruits of distrust

They say have to
We say we must
And I think I know
How this ends

Why don't we leave them alone
With the war in the heavens
Tell me where do we go
Why don't we leave them alone
Ah, Enough is enough
When do we learn to say no

I don't really want to live in fear
This thing hanging up in the sky
Strangles the spirit
Hardens the heart
Clouds up the stars in the eyes

How can it be
We've come this far
One tiny place
Among billions of stars

We haven't learned yet
We really are
Only one
Living thing

When It's all finished
What we've begun
Our tale is told
Our race is run

We will be measured
By what we have done
And what we've left
alone

Why don't we leave them alone
Jus the stars in the sky
Where all wishes get thrown
Why don't we leave them alone
Ah, Enough is enough
When do we learn to say
Enough is enough
When do we learn to say
Enough is enough
When do we learn to say no

The Piper's Chair

For Micho Russell, Doolin, County Clare.

Oh for the days of the piper's chair
When the stories filled the music, and the music filled the air
Is it just a trick of memory or did we live without a care?
When we sat and played our tunes upon the piper's chair

When I was just a wee lad a growing in my spring
I would hear my mother's stories and my father's arms I'd swing
And with my brother Packy I'd run to the meadow where
We would sit and play our tunes upon the piper's chair

And as our legs grew longer we learned our lessons well
The fiddle and the whistle casting over us their spell
When the old folks gathered round at night you'd want to listen well
For every song they'd sang there was a story they would tell

Oh for the days of the piper's chair
When the stories filled the music, and the music filled the air
Is it just a trick of memory or did we live without a care?
When we sat and played our tunes upon the piper's chair

Now Doolin's just a small town a sittin on the bay
But the people came from miles around to hear us when we played
And O'Connor's pub was crawling and the music filled the air
As I sat and played my flute upon the piper's chair

But now I am an old man, my hills no longer green
And it's two years since my brother's gone; no more will he be seen
It's it just and old man's fancy or has the magic left the air
For there's no music in the meadow from the piper's chair

Oh they can play their fiddles but I fear that's something's wrong
For it seems they know the music but they cannot hear the song
The Irish tongue is dying and there's no one seems to care
And you'll find no children playing on the piper's chair

Oh for the days of the piper's chair
When the stories filled the music, and the music filled the air
Is it just a trick of memory or did we live without a care?
When we sat and played our tunes upon the piper's chair

One More Story

Friends along the highway
Pals upon the road
All that time together
We shared each other’s load
Now here you are at my door
With sand still in your shoes
Come on in and let me hear the news

Chorus
Tell me one more story before you go
I’m sure there’s more to say
There's more that we should know
There’s no reason for you leavin’
If you’ve still got seeds to sow
Tell me one more story before you go

Where have you been traveling?
Tell me how you been
Let the yarn unravel
Let the tales begin
Of the forests and the mountains
The sand along the sea
Fill the room with magic for me

Chorus

Tell me of the loves you won
Tell me what you lost
Tell me of the lessons learned
Tell me what they cost
Tell me of the times
When you sank in your despair
And the times when you couldn't have a care

Chorus

When the tales are told
You don’t have any more
It’s time to get back on the road
I’ll show you to the door
There’s still time for me and you
So don’t lace up your shoes
‘Cause when you’re done
I’ll tell a story, too

Chorus

For the Earth
©Bill Harley, All rights reserved

This one's for the earth

And this one's for the big blue ball

Spinning round in space

Mother to us all

This one's from a child of hers

Who isn't all that strong

Though he sometimes hears the music

Sometimes sings along

Lying on the sands

He hears the oceans roar

He counts the stars above him

His spirit starts to soar

He swears he feels the earth move

Spinning round the sun

For a moment he thinks he knows her

For a moment they are one

Chorus

And way up in the kingdom

Her pageant is begun

And in time to her rhythms

The circle dance is done

The hills turn into gold

As the sun sets in the west

As the darkness gathers round them

Her children call out, "Yes"

Chorus

One earth, one life

One people, one chance

To learn the steps

To do the dance

Voices raised in anger

Voices raised in song

They join there in the streets

Until they count a million strong

It's a rainbow of colors

It's a rainbow of lives

As the wind blows o'er their number

And whispers out, "Survive"

Chorus (2 times)
